Admin Day Sun 15 Nov 24
We continue to work with RAF Shawbury to update the safety case to ensure that we can recommence and then continue to fly through the various phases of the Airfield Operating Surfaces (AOS) project. Frustrating for our members and more so for our MEF gliding scholarship students who are in constant contact asking when they can get back into the air.
Nigel briefed us on where we are with the safety case and that we have completed all the outstanding actions. We feel confident that we have given RAF Shawbury all the evidence required and hope that we can get back to flying for next w’end.
Tug pilots went out on to the airfield with Dep Oic Nigel and CFI Ian to recce all designated operating surfaces that are available in the current phase of works and, in particular, take-off decision points, climb-out routes, the EFATO/PLATO options and circuit patterns. Each flying day will require this recce that forms part of our normal daily dynamic risk assessment. We finally found a use for Geoff M – FOD checks 🤣
We continue to make full use of this pause in flying. The annual on the club Astir (R66) continued and the pause has allowed us to address one or two minor niggles- the nice to do but not essential…….
…….and the Tin Shed continues to receive attention - nothing that a lump hammer and a can opener can’t fix!
Dates for your Diary
The club is hosting a visit by Shawbury Air Scouts 1930 – 2130 on Fri 17 Jan 25. Our younger members are asked to help out if the can and let us know if you can attend via the club website.
The club has registered for the BGA 2025 National Women’s Go Gliding Weekend of 26/27 April, with a fall-back date 17/18 May. The aim is to encourage more women to try gliding on one of those weekend days and to be inspired to learn to fly as a member of a gliding club.
