Flying Report Sat 13 Jul 2024

The threat of rain was always in the air today but despite leaden skies, thankfully it held off until 1425 when flying was scrubbed.

However, and in no small part due to some quite splendid, morale boosting Lemon Drizzle Cake courtesy of Mrs #vulcanbomber…..

…..in that time we managed to complete almost all our flying programme with the exception of Rob who is a priority for next flying day.  With the bulk of your MEF students away on RIAT preparation it was left to the two Harrys and Charlie to fly the flag and in between the helo movements, they enjoyed a busy day.

We have two members, Paul and Charlie, who are both nearing solo standard and they took advantage of the TMG to undertake eventualities training for which Colin did the pre-flight brief.  Only the curtailed flying day probably prevented them going solo today.

We always enjoy visitors particularly when it is our own friends and relatives.  Ivan brought Granddaughter Isobel and we placed her in the capable hands of Geoff M. Well done Isobel and we look forward to seeing you on another occasion when Grandad said he would gladly pay for a lot more training!.

Our two MEF gliding scholarship students, the Cosford based Harrys, enjoyed 6 trips between them and both are making great progress with their flying.

Shawbury based MEF student Charlie followed up his eventualities training with a few circuits under the watchful eye of Colin.  I think we ran out of time today but Charlie is very near to going solo.

Putting in place a cunning plan, in between nappy changes (not his own!) Will negotiated an escape pass for a few hours to enjoy some peaceful flying club bonding on the airfield.  Super dodge Will and worth a repeat next week.

If you put an English Vicar and a Jock in an aircraft together to where do they fly?  Wales of course, and that’s where Connor-dor MacTavish – yes, he of RAF News fame……

…..and the The Vicar popped off to when they took a trip to Welshpool in KE to get away from the hard graft on the airfield.

News Flash.  We have eventually managed to wean #vulcanbomber off the K21 and into the single seat Astir.  A great first launch in the Astir was followed by 5 equally terrific landings so well done lad and we look forward to seeing more!

Launching today off r’way 23 it was clear that with cloud base sitting stubbornly at 2,500ft there was no lift, and it seemed that whichever way you turned you would, at some stage, run into light rain.

As skies darkened a check on the rainfall radar left us in no doubt that our flying day was done

21 launches and over 6hrs 30mins of flying time was a great effort on the day, a day that finished by moving all the club assets in prep for a Station event from Hangar 4 to Hangar 1 and thanks to all those who stayed the course, top job.
