Flying Report Sat 21 May 22

With the need to get KE back to RAF Marham today it was a truncated day’s flying. Overcast skies and a low cloud base left us scratching around to find any lift.  Many thanks indeed to Fenland GC for the loan of KE which enabled us to keep flying at Shawbury whilst WG was undergoing maintenance.

Well done on the second flight of the day to early solo pilot Andy Hagan who executed the perfect overshoot in landing long on Shawbury’s r’way 16.  Andy is now at the stage where he is ready to convert to the single seat K18 once it has completed its annual inspection.

We welcomed former club member Sophie who returned to flying after a long break.  Delighted that you enjoyed your flights with Geoff today and we look forward to seeing you back on the airfield and vying for a seat in R66!

We’ve almost reached the end of our programme of flying 1st Shawbury Air Scouts and it’s clear that it has generated a lot of interest in both the RAF and Air Cadets.  Instructor Will Dean enjoyed a flight today with Isaac in R35, with an aerotow to 2,000ft.  Glad you enjoyed the trip Isaac.

The 2nd part of Will’s day was an instructor’s check flight with CFI Ian Gallacher.  Having listened attentively to Will’s pre-launch eventualities briefing, Ian pulled the bung for a low level launch failure practice, to land safely somewhere on the airfield!  Well  done Will and we’re relieved that we are all safe for another year!

With the need to get KE to Marham then return in WG, flying ceased at 14:30 having achieved 4h 20mins of flying time.   Whilst Alan flew KE, Colin flew in WG and they arrived back at Shawbury at 18:30 in WG having achieved, at one stage, a stunning ground speed of 400kts - awesome!
