Flying Report 4 Mar 23

A cold and overcast day on which the sun failed to show but, nevertheless we got our first taste of some thermic activity., albeit limited. A large gathering, 6 aircraft on the launch point and 2 tugs kept everyone fully occupied - as did a lot of cake!.  It was great to see so many youngsters and it was also a day of firsts from some.

1st away on a bit of a wing and a prayer was The Vicar and flying with the CFI in the front seat, everyone else praying for an uneventful flight……

……at the end of which we are chuffed to say that subject to submission of the BGA paperwork, we have a new BI.  Congratulations Toby and very well done.

Our MEF students were the early flyers, amongst them Rob who picked up where he left off last time and Clarke who joined us for his first flight. Thanks, too, to Harry for some very diligent log keeping.

We were delighted to welcome 13 year old George for his first flight.  George lives locally, had seen us flying overhead, and persuaded Dad to buy him a flight.  With Will in the back seat George was able to look down at where he lived and Will must have impressed him as George signed up as a Junior Member.  Good to meet you George and we look forward to seeing you out on the airfield.

Another of Junior Members enjoyed a very full day.  Amelia took her first trip in a K18, another aircraft to add to her bucket list.  There is clearly going to be competition for a K18 seat once the soaring season hots up.

She then went off with CFI in the Motor Glider to complete her field landing checks at the end of which there was the usual thorough debrief.  What do you learn?  Well finding the field you initially selected can be a challenge 😮.  We look forward to Amelia starting her BI training soon.

It’s always a good ruse to keep The Dear Leader fully occupied.  After a spell of tugging Alan took his DG400 out for a spin much to the amazement of some of our visitors who did not realise that there was a glider that could self-launch.

Congratulations to Jack Haynes, another of our youngsters who converted to a single seater today.  Jack also heard that his course at Syerston had been confirmed; progress indeed.

Last flight of the day in R66 went to Sophie who organised the day - thanks Sophie.

Other highlights from a busy day that saw over 13 hours of flying time were

  • Richard Head who declared that he was 4 trips and £85 nearer to solo,

  • Geoff M who tickled out a trip of over 2 hours in his Ventus without (so he said) firing up the iron thermal.

  • and John Luke who took a long trip in the 2nd Motor Glider as he builds up his hours toward his tuggie qualification.

A great day out.
