Flying Report Sat 30 Apr 22

There has to be something wrong when you open the doors of Hangar 4 to find one of the club members sitting on the floor and engrossed in all matters Glidex.  Perhaps he couldn’t wait to update the new increased flying fees!

It was going to be a busy day with 2 Air Scouts, a BI and four new trainees from Cosford who had turned up for their first flights.  With key personnel away flying with the RAFGSA in the French Alps, many thanks to Nigel Lassiter from the Midland Gliding Club for pitching in to assist with the flying programme.  With a good weather forecast all were on for an enjoyable day.

We continue to enjoy flying our visitors from 1st Shawbury Air Scouts; their infectious enthusiasm rubs off on us all.  This week we welcomed Rose and Huw who flew with Geoff and Will respectively; perhaps we will see you on another occasion after you join the RAF.

With booming thermals to 6,000 feet we enjoyed a great day’s flying indeed it was difficult to come down.  That made the flights for our young trainees all the more fantastic.  Steve, Richie, Oliver and Isaac were all able to take two trips each during the day and make the most of the fantastic conditions.

Pick of the flights went to Will Dean and Isaac with a time of 1h 16m, and seen here enjoying the views, the latter of Hawkstone Park from 5,000ft.

If an unpowered flight up with the Buzzards is on your bucket list then go to https://www.gliding.co.uk/buy-voucher/.  Once you have purchased a voucher from the BGA contact us at https://www.rafshawburygc.co.uk/contact-us  to book your trial lesson.  That’s exactly what Miles’ family did for Dad’s 50th Birthday.  A much anticipated flight saw Andy reach heights of almost 4,000ft and then descending through a series of loops with the help of instructor Nigel Lassiter in the back seat. After his flight Andy said that it was it was truly one of the best things he had ever done. Glad you enjoyed the experience and see you next time Andy.

Flying ended at 16:30 with everyone having enjoyed a fantastic day that saw 18 launches and over 14 hours flying time.  And finally, congratulations to John Luke on achieving his Silver height. Let’s hope BH Monday is every bit as good.

John Luke’s Silver Height gain.
