Non-Flying Day Sun 9 Feb 25

Yet another day lost to the weather with low cloud and mist hanging over the airfield.  Viz was poor too.

To keep ourselves occupied we rigged 243 after its annual, ready to be taken to Denbigh……

……and ate yummy choco cake with many thanks to Mrs #vulcanbomber.

Nigel (he’s the old lad in the rather fetching braces!) decided that WG need an oil change and engine check, ably assisted by Esther.  Esther is nearing the end of her course at Cosford and we wish her well in her next posting to Coningsby.

Welcome to Harry “H” (to differentiate him from Harry C and Harry M) and Will, two of our latest cohort of MEF gliding bursary students.  After a tour of club facilities Laura introduced them to the K21.

Toby, recently returned from much warmer climes, then took them for an hour’s instruction on the simulator in preparation for a flying day next weekend.

Lunch in the club room provided time for the old lads to tell how it was last century – neither Harry H nor Will were born in the last century:

  • iron bombs dropped on unsuspecting salmon in a Scottish Loch by #vulcan bomber,

  • inverted at 60,000ft in a Lightning by Mike O and

  • Geoff M #boozecruise mentioned something called a Javelin.  We all thought he was talking about an Olympic sport but it was, apparently, an RAF aircraft.

Finally Nigella gave an enthralled Ester a very important lesson on the use of the VDB (it’s a Visual Display Board) and as can be seen it’s very, errr visual!.

That’s it!

Diary dates:

2 Mar 25.  BGA Women’s Advocate, Yvonne Elliott will be visiting the club and will be hosted by our women’s ambassador Laura.

24 – 29 Mar 25.  Denbigh Exped.

National Women's Go Gliding Weekend.  The concept is that on one day during the weekend of the 26/27 April 2025 (with a fall-back weekend of 17/18 May), the club will focus on welcoming women, with the aim of helping them to discover gliding and membership of the club.  We will need normal attendance by members to help on the day please.
