DENBIGH REPORT MON & TUE
With Geoff M testing +ve for Covid on Sunday evening and then returning home, there was none of his usual fried breakfast in bed for syndicate partner Mike O on Monday morning. And that really set the tone for Monday – no lift and no flying. So we sat around and monged and talked about flying! Mike O then insisted on telling us how fantastic things used to be at Lleweni Parc when he ran it!
Where are we? For those who don’t know, Lleweni Parc is located about 3 miles NW of Denbigh. Our accommodation is halfway between the airfield, which we can see, and the Clwydian Ridge which rises above us. On launch we get great views of the Wirral and Liverpool to the NE, North we can see the Irish Sea and to the South West, Snowdonia dominates the skyline. On the ridge the Bodfari Mast is a key local landmark and two minute flight time from the airfield.
Tuesday’s forecast looked better and hopes were high. On arrival at the airfield it was clear that everyone else had the same expectations with a large number of gliders being rigged. The new blade that had been order overnight for the DG Lawnmower arrived in time for fitting in the morning.
It then became clear that the forecast was going to frustrate everyone’s expectations. Weak winds, weak wave, broken thermals and a poor star rating were disappointing, nevertheless, those with itchy feet and money to burn decided that they needed to get airborne with the first launch at 1200. Once airborne it was struggle for most and the viz was shocking, typical of the high pressure sitting over the area.
Not all launches went smoothly – there’s a reason for rehearsing eventualities.
It was a surprise and delight to welcome past member Sophie who popped in to see us and we soon put her to work pushing gliders around. Look forward to seeing you on another day at Shawbury Sophe’s
The day really did disappoint with everyone back on the ground by 1630. However, the forecast into the rest of the week is looking up, so-much-so that we may persuade Will to do his 50km before the end of the week. We might then tempt Mike O into the air - he hasn’t taken a trip yet in 243!
