Flying Report Sat 23 Apr 22

After the fantastic conditions that we enjoyed over the Easter BH it was only a matter of time before nature brought us back down to earth(sic!), and that was today.  Whilst the forecast had predicted overcast conditions and a stiff breeze, in the absence of a cross-section no mention at all of low level turbulence.  Whilst experiencing these conditions is a valuable exercise it was not a day to test our pre-solo pilots Micky and Jack, so well done on persevering.

A man knows when he is growing old because he begins to look like his father!  It was just one of those conversations you have Jack when you are locked in a cockpit with your DAD!!!

Our programme of flying 1st Shawbury Air Scouts is gathering pace and it was a delight to welcome young Logan for his first flight in any aircraft.  Once he had got over the fact that he wasn’t required to land the K21, everything went well in the capable hands of instructor Colin Haynes.  Catch them young - here’s an instant RAF recruit of the future.

Avid readers (apparently we have some) of the blog will begin to see that we are gradually marking up our RAF Shawbury Gliding Club fleet.  The only exception is R35 which carries, in addition, the logo of the RAF Central Fund (RAFCF).  R35 is the dedicated MEF gliding course aircraft, the courses which commence from May only made possible because of the RAFCF grant.

It was a pleasure to welcome visitor Phil for a 60th Birthday present BI flight.  The only trouble was that Phil is now 63, the delay to his Birthday flight being brought about by Covid!  We got there in the end Phil and glad you enjoyed the trip, despite the weather.

As conditions became more turbulent, and after only 10 launches, flying ceased at 1430 with ample time to box R22 for the trip out to Sisteron on Monday.  Three lucky club members have been selected to attend this fantastic tri-service exped and we hope to be able to report progress later.

Finally, those of you who read our flying report of Sat 2 Apr 22 know how keen we are that if embarking on a cross country flight you ensure you make provision for  your gentleman’s plumbing apparatus.  It would assist the FOD hounds if you get ensure that on completion of your flight that you remove all said apparatus and not leave elements in the cockpit! (Is this plug and go?)
