Instructor Recency & Currency Saturday 20 March 2021

In line with our earlier blog, and having missed a flying day last Sunday due to bad weather, it was great to be out on the airfield where we made a start on achieving instructor recency and currency in both 2 seater gliders and the motor glider.  This is essential before the start of check flights for qualified pilots, who will then be permitted to undertake their own sorties to maintain flying skills and competencies.  Finally, as permitted under Step 2 of the Government’s roadmap out of COVID-19, it is expected that instructional flying will commence again from the weekend of 17th April 2021 and we all look forward to welcoming new faces.

The day started with a comprehensive and socially distanced briefing in Hangar 4 from our CFI Ian Gallacher.  Following establishment of the launch point on r’way 36 Norm Potts then reminded all of the importance of the BGA ABCDE checks and the Air Cadets AAEFC student checks in order to achieve focus before we even get in the aircraft.

Initially a low cloud base restricted aero-tows to 2,000 feet but this lifted later in the day to permit the full range of stalling and spinning practice.

It was great return to flying but not all recency requirements for instructors was achieved so there will be a further flying day for instructors next Saturday.
